We work with manufacturers and designers to build a custom sled for your consumer device. In many cases, especially for large deployments, implementing a rugged sled rather than buying a rugged device can lower the overall cost. In the paragraphs below, we look at the pros and cons of using a rugged sled, and we also give an example of a sled that we created for the Nexus 7™ tablet.
A Rugged Device vs. a Rugged Sled
While it may be most practical to buy rugged devices in some cases, in others, designing a sled for consumer devices may save on costs. If your work environment isn't unusually hazardous, or if you want a protective shell for your device in case an accident occurs, then a sled might be the better option. If you expect your device to go through a lot of wear and tear, if you need it to operate in extreme temperatures, or if there's a chance it might be dropped into water or infiltrated by sand, then a rugged device is the best option. If you're not sure which option best suits your needs, please contact us.
About the Diamondback Sled
In 2014-2015, we helped design a sled for Cassens Transport, an automotive transport company. It is built to fit over the Nexus 7 tablet. The sled contains a Motorola 2D scanning engine, hand straps, and scan buttons. Named after the diamondback terrapin, an aquatic turtle, the scanner has a hard, durable shell encasing a sophisticated 2D CMOS imaging scanner, which features a laser aimer.
The Diamondback scanner uses SDG Systems’ Enterprise Platform Extension Framework for barcode scanning, EPX-B. EPX-B is a full-featured, modular, barcode software package for Android. It includes a developer SDK that fully supports the functionality of the Motorola SE4750 scan engine.
The Diamondback N7 scanner is geared toward either rapid deployment, or as a proof of concept for companies to evaluate the solution for other Android phones or tablets. The technology can be quickly adapted to new devices.
